The Sweetheart Doll was one of the first plush dolls Mary Meyer made. She was in the first catalog Mary Meyer printed in Black and White of their early 1950’s line of plush toys.
It was a very pretty doll with a wide pillow base, with White hands and feet and a wide brimmed bonnet and a satin White ribbon. I believe my Mother- Mary Meyer designed it about 1950.
It was also made as a Swiss Musical with a wind-up Swiss mechanism with the key in the back of the doll.
The faces were styled after the Lenci Dolls made in Italy in the early 1900’s. The plush was Rayon plush and manufactured by Baxter, Kelly & Faust in their Philadelphia mill. The face was made of buckram with painted details. Buckram is a stiff, canvas like fabric that is formed with the contours of a face and then layers of paint are applied and finally the eyes, nose and mouth. The dolls were stuffed by hand with cotton batting. The opening through which they are stuffed is then sewn closed, the doll brushed to remove any lint or dust and a satin bow is there added to finish the doll.

My Mother- Mary Meyer designed this doll about 1950 and it was a lady’s bedroom decoration, rather than a toy to play with. A second version had a wind-up Swiss musical mechanism with the key in the back of the doll which played Brahms Lullabye.
