RAG DOLL

My Mother- Mary Meyer designed this doll about 1950 and it was a lady’s bedroom decoration, rather than a toy to play with. A second version had a wind-up Swiss musical mechanism with the key in the back of the doll which played Brahms Lullabye.

The faces were styled after the beautiful Lenci Dolls made in Italy in the early 1900’s. The doll was made of Rayon plush, manufactured by Baxter, Kelly & Faust in their Philadelphia, Pa mill. The face was made of buckram with painted details. Buckram is a stiff, canvas like fabric that is formed with the contours of a face and then layers of paint are applied and finally the eyes, nose and mouth. The dolls were stuffed by hand with garnetted cotton bating. The opening through which they are stuffed is then sewn closed, the doll brushed to remove any lint or dust and a satin bow is then added to finish the doll.

This Rag Doll has a cotton and polyester fabric body and clothing with Yellow yarn hair,

felt decorations on the face, Black fabric shoes. It was made in this the large 29” size

and a smaller version about 14” high. In the smaller version there was also a Boy Rag

Doll at 14” high.
