MUSICAL ELEPHANT
The #980 Musical Elephant with moving trunk was a very popular Mary Meyer design
for many years. It was made of grey rayon plush. The grey rayon plush was made by Baxter, Kelly & Faust, Inc. in Philadelphia, PA. in the 1960’s.
The musical mechanism was made in Switzerland and was a “Waggie”, which means that there was a bent shaft extending out of the music box that turned as the music played. The reason the shaft was bent was to give the toy the appearance that the Elephant’s trunk was turning as the music box played. The key to wind the music box was located on the lower jaw of the elephant. The musical toy had a “I’m A Musical” ribbon cemented on the toy’s neck, so the purchaser would know it was a musical toy.
The eyes were 3 layers of felt circles – the smallest black felt circle on top of a
slightly larger white felt circle and these on top of a slightly larger Black felt circle plus a white pompom on the end of its trunk. The toy also had a red satin neck-ribbon.
This Musical Elephant was one of the most popular stuffed toy designs that Mary Meyer produced during the 1960’s and 1970.
