MUSICAL ELEPHANT
The #990 Musical Elephant with Moving Trunk is an 8” high stuffed grey Elephant with
white felt ears and tail, and was a very popular musical toy for many years. The grey
rayon plush was made by Baxter, Kelly & Faust, Inc. in Philadelphia, PA. in the 1960’s.
The musical mechanism was made in Switzerland and was a “Waggie”, which means
that there was a bent shaft extending out of the music box that turned as the music
played. The reason the shaft was bent was to give the toy the appearance that the
Elephant’s trunk was turning as the music box played. The standard tunes for musical
mechanism was “Brahms Lullaby”, “Rock bye Baby”, and others.
The eyes were 3 layers of felt circles – the smallest black felt circle on top of a
slightly larger white felt circle and these on top of a slightly larger black felt circle. Its ears and tail were White felt. It had a ribbon cemented on its neck that said “I’m A Musical” plus a satin neck-ribbon. This was a very popular Mary Meyer design during the 1960 and early 1970’s and manufactured in Townshend, Vermont.
