BABY BUNNY
This Bunny was first created in the early 1950’s. It was made in Pink, Blue and Yellow
with White plush ear linings of Rayon plush made by Baxter, Kelly & Faust in the
Philadelphia, Pa mill. This was a very popular design, because it was our least
expensive bunny and retails for $1.25 each in the 1950’ and 1960’s. It was stuffed with
shredded foam rubber at first and in the 1960’s it was changed to shredded
polyurethane as it was of lighter weight and washed better than foam rubber. To finish
the Bunnies a satin neck-ribbon was attached to the toy.
The eyes on the early 1950’s Baby Bunny were sewn onto the bunny using a French
Knot as the center of the eye. The eye was made up of a White felt circle on the
bottom, followed by a Black felt, slightly smaller circle and finally a French Knot to sew the eye onto the bunny. See French Knot eye photo.
In the middle and late 1950’s these were replaced a Black felt circle with tiny White felt square in the place of the French Knot. Instead of sewing the eye onto the bunny, the felt eyes were attached with a water-proof adhesive. The felt nose and Red felt tongue were also attached with this adhesive.
The body design was used both for Easter Bunnies and for Baby Puppies. By changing
the ears from a stand-up long ear to a floppy ear hanging down, the design could be
changed from Bunny to Puppy. See Tiny White felt square eye photo.
